COLUMBUS VIEWPOINT

Description

Built to honour the intrepid explorer Christopher Columbus, the Columbus monument is an impressive viewpoint 60 metres high, adjacent to the Barcelona port.

The viewpoint is made up of an enormous Corinthian column above which the statue of Columbus rises. At the base of the column we find several sculptural groups that all touch the theme of the discovery of America encircled by eight iron lions, much favoured by clamberers. In 1881 it was decided to honour Christopher Columbus for choosing Barcelona as the port to disembark upon return from his strenuous journey to America. Seven years later in 1888 the monument was inaugurated on occasion of the Universal Expo.

As forcible a monument as it may be, the view obtained from inside leaves much to desire. Its top is rather limited in space and visitors squeeze their way in pressed against small glasses eager to look out, this makes for a rather uncomfortable visit all considered that the wonderful views of the harbour that it has to offer render it special.
