ESTACIÓ DEL NORD – GLÒRIES NEIGHBORHOOD

Description

One of the newest and most artistically influential neighbourhood’s in recent years due to the great remodelling undergone in the early XXI century is, without doubt, the neighbourhood of Estació del Nord (North Station) and the neighbouring Plaça de les Glòries.

Much blame falls on the Agbar Tower designed by Jean Nouvel and constructed in 2003 which was intended as a nexus between Avinguda Diagonal, Gran Vía de las Corts Catalanes and Avinguda Meridiana. Alongside the Agbar Tower stand buildings such as the National Theatre and Museum of Design which confer this neighbourhood a renewed magnetism converting it into an attraction for tourists who may contemplate this fabulous little haven that not until long ago hosted the market “Encants de Barcelona” an area crawling with life where merchants and visitors alike would engage in continuous barter.

The area surrounding Estació del Nord (North Station) was where the Aguas de Barcelona deposit stationed that later gave room for passage to a library of none other than one of the most prestigious university’s in Barcelona, the University of Pompeu Fabra.

Another charm we may encounter in this area is the Arc del Triomf (Arch of Triumph) an obliged stop as is a quick stroll in the nearby park, a breath of fresh air in the city. Works of great stature and also heaven to art and music aficionados are the Teatro Nacional de Catalunya, designed by the Barcelonese Ricardo Bofill, the Auditorium where we may take pleasure from its superb Symphony Hall with a capacity to accommodate over 20.000 spectators and too, within its walls, the Museum of Music.
