ENCANTS MARKET

Description
The Mercat del Encants (Encants Market) is one of the oldest market’s in Europe. More popularly known as Encants Vells (Old Encants) it is much more than a mere antiquities flee market, but rather it orients its centenary practice and apparent provisional nature to current demand bringing within the consumer’s reach an alternative to today’s models of trade and distribution.
There are references that place its origins in the XIV century though acting more as a witness to Barcelona’s commercial dynamism. Professionals and dealers strive that this market provide an outlet for those products that are no longer obtainable through other channels.
The public auction is one of its prime events, but then that’s not all. The massive amount of buyers – approximately 100.000 weekly – who are aware of this offer, make it unique especially when it comes to hunting for a bargain or recycling and reselling used items. Second-hand furniture or period pieces, antiques, vintage clothing, old books and records, collectibles, electrical equipment, household appliances new and used, an ample range of second-hand goodies as well as newly packaged goods, house décor, DIY bits and gobbets.
Recently, it was established to change its location, placing the new market in the old Bosquet de Encants at the junction of Meridiana with Carrer de Castillejos in the Eixample district with a total area of 33.306 square metres.
The project in stall for the new market presents a design that has all commercial activity managed under a roof and shielded from the sun, yet preserving the ambience of an open air market.
