GÜELL PARK

Description
Park Güell is without a shadow of doubt the city’s park par excellence. A piece of work born in 1904 straight out of the hands of Gaudí whose continued efforts to demonstrate to us all his talent is clearly reflected in its varied display of shapes and colour; by pouring heart and soul up until the year 1914 Gaudí achieved what is likely to be considered his finest work.
The prime mover of this project was Eusebi Güell, Gaudí’s benefactor. The idea behind it all was to recreate and run a tiny corner of paradise surrounded by a green and lush garden within the cosmos of the city. However, its development remains far from what it was originally sought out to be, a small housing complex for Catalonia’s high society, in the heart of the old Vila de Gràcia. Though the project was initially designed to include a total of forty single family houses, the end result was a composition of two; one of these is where Gaudí chose to settle and is where we now find the Casa-Museu Gaudí (Gaudí’s home-museum); it is here that we are able to contemplate the very place source of this Catalan genius’ many great ideas.
Despite distancing itself from the original plan, what stand out are the great and colourful ceramic dragon greeting us upon arrival just as well as for the extraordinary grand plaza which rests upon over eighty-six columns that gather the all the water from the park. When finding yourself amidst these, you’ll be able to enjoy the mosaics that embellish its tall ceiling. These mosaics along with the bench in the plaza were built one piece at a time and it is for this reason that the park has been declared a World Heritage site.
Allow yourself to be carried adrift by the magic and enchantment that such a unique place irradiates and to be touched by the energy and joy which emanate from each of its corners.
