NOU BARRIS CENTRAL PARK

Description

Nou Barris Central Park is an urban park in the Nou Barris district, Barcelona. It has a total extension of 17,7 hectares and is one of the biggest parks in the city.

It was designed by architects Carme Fiol and Andreu Arriola. On its premises and dating back to its beginnings, is part of an old asylum the Manicomi de la Santa Creu (inaugurated in 1889 and designed by architect Josep Oriol Bernadet according to the directives of doctor Emili Pi i Molist and with a capacity to hold 600 patients) now converted into an enclosure composed of the Nou Barris Public Library, the Nou Barris Municipal Board and a police station.

With the second phase of its rennovation, an extensive green area was introduced containing two lakes split by the Fabra i Puig boardwalk; it contains a total of 1562 trees and over 500 shrubs, counting more than 30 different types of species. It is almost impossible not to mention the two additions to this park, namely the pair of country houses Can Carreras and Can Ensenya.

Though, what does stick out like a sore thumb is the ancient aqueduct Dos Rius that today runs above one of its lakes, but in the past traversed the torrent Can Carreras in such way uniting Nou Barris with the neighbouring district of Horta – Guinardó.
