TURÓ DE LA PEIRA PARK

Description

Turó de la Peira Park is located in the district of Nou Barris, the oldest and most natural since its inauguration in 1936. It spans across an area of 8 hectares covered in thickets and lush pine trees stick out a mile among the other species located on the west end of the neighbourhood named after the park. The hill belonged to the old farmhouse Can Peguera which lends its name to the adjoining neighbourhood.

In the early 60s houses started sprouting left and right replacing great part of the green area that belonged to the park reducing significantly its total surface. This came as a result of a partial urban development plan, common practice in the Pre-Democratic era, which meant a sharp increase in the construction of substandard households, but no plan to implement neither services nor infrastructure. It wasn’t until 1977 that this area was recovered and replanted. The part further up managed to withstand these changes just as well as it did the civil war. In March 2007 a comprehensive rehabilitation plan was set into action and all services and infrastructure brought up to date.

Crowned by a gazebo embellished with a large metal cross, this makes for an excellent view point from which to observe a substantial part of the neighbourhood and great part of Barcelona.

Either the stairs of its interior or the slanting paths woven through its pine trees will ease our access to the services it provides. In fact, we can list, among some, playgrounds, ping pong tables, basketball courts, volleyball courts and football pitches, a dog’s park, lavatories and a parking space and numerous fountains, benches and picnic areas..
