FRANK GEHRY FISH

Description

The Peix (Fish) by Frank Gehry who, on occasion of the Barcelona Olympic games, was entrusted with the task of an art intervention in the port for which the artist proposes a large steel structure in the shape of a fish whose shimmering gold reflections mark where the Olympic Port promenade begins.

A sculpture that measures 56 metres in width and 35 metres in height and that is located alongside the Arts and Mapfre towers in the Olympic Port of Barcelona. It’s a monumental metal sculpture representing a golden fish: an entanglement of thin metallic bands that interlace to create a netting of distinct abstract style. Despite its abstract nature, it is possible to distinguish the figure of a fish, whose scales glimmer a golden light when struck by the rays of the sun.

Frank describes these objects as fish. A fish’s skin doesn’t allude not even remotely to its internal organs. However, a fish can be beautiful as it has surely been thought to fit in its environment and its skin confers the organism dynamic coherence. The idea of a fish, he says, is his expression of rage against the useless historical references of Postmodernism.
