LLUÍS COMPANYS OLYMPIC STADIUM

Description
The Olympic Stadium Lluís Companys (formerly known as Montjüic Olympic Stadium) is a sports stadium located in Barcelona. Built under Franco’s regime and rebaptized as such on 31st March 2001 in honour of former president of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Lluís Companys, it situates itself on the hills of Montjüic.
Designed by architect Luís Abellán Aynés it was inaugurated on occasion of the International Exposition held in Barcelona in 1929. In purview of the Olympic Games the city was to host in 1992, the building underwent major remodelling under the supervision of the team of leading architects Corre – Milá – Margarit – Buxadé, that also saw the contributions of Italian architect Vittorio Gregotti.
Ripped apart, what remnants remain of the original design are its exterior façades, with exception though to its western section rebuilt after attempts to salvage its structure failed; a grand addition to the Stadium are its bleachers that can bear a total crowd capacity of 55.926 spectators.
2001 is the year that marks a defining moment in the history of the stadium’s making when it receives its official name of Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in tribute to Catalonia’s former president executed in 1940 in the nearby Montjuïc Castle.
